SOTD – Albatross by Big Wreck

Gotta show support for local bands, friends. Boston-based Big Wreck are older than you think, forming all the way back in 1994 at Berklee College of music in Cambridge. The lead singer Ian Thornley shows vague vocal resemblance to legendary Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. Don’t tell that to the die hard Big Wreck cult followers however, because they’re willing to fight vicious social media wars with people over who was on the music scene first and who sings better than who.

I have to mention, given how slow the chord progression is in this song, that double neck guitar is pretty unnecessary and generally ostentatious. When I first heard this song back in 2012 and knew nothing about how music is made, it seemed cool. After gaining a rudimentary knowledge about music creation however, its a bit of an annoyance. Complaints aside, Big Wreck has a cult following for a good reason. Thornley  ignites 90’s nostalgia with his perfectly gruff voice to a time where half the hit music singers had a similar raw vocal style.Sure this song was made in 2012, but based on his voice alone if I told you it was made back in 1997, I bet you’d believe me.
